I uninstalled SP3 and then reinstalled it. I cannot install Windows Updates now, even
individual updates downloaded by themselves. Maybe the Windows installer got corrupted ?
Any help would be great as my only option now is to reinstall XP from scratch. Not a huge
deal but I'd rather not have to if it can be fixed.

Had the same problem. Here's the solution that worked for me from http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=910517

Suggestion 2: Reinstall Windows Update Agent 3.0
======================================
1. Visit the following link and download Windows Update Agent 3.0 to the C:
(Choose Save, click My Computer on left panel, Click C:\, Click Open and
Click Save)

http://download.windowsupdate....sUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

2. Click Start, Click Run and copy the following command to the panel:

C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

Note: There is a space between "C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" and
"/wuforce".

Thanks. I'll give it a try this afternoon. Nothing to lose if it mucks things up since reinstalling
is the second option anyway.

Another one for you if you have the time. After SP3 the Standby changed to Hibernate
and now when I choose hibernate or shutdown my computer does not turn off,
windows displays a " It is now safe to turn off your computer " message and I have
to hit the power button. It didn't do this prior to SP3. It would simply turn off.
I posted this question in another category here but a bunch of looks and no reply.

Went through that entire process today. Reason? Turns out that IE7 cannot be uninstalled if SP3 were installed on top of it.

I found I needed to uninstall IE7, but SP3 was already there.

So, I folooowed the Microsoft KB and uninstalled SP3. It took a while, but it eventually was gone. Then I uninstalled IE7. That took a while as well,.

Having done that, I reinstalled SP3 using the Windows Update link. That took about an hour, but it got done. Then I reinstalled IE7. Now everything is copasetic.

I wonder why Microsoft did not caveat this in bold face a few months ago?

Anyway - alls well now.

Hmm, that one is usually an ACPI compatibility issue and on most computers it's due to a BIOS setting improperly set or Windows incorrectly detecting the appropriate HAL to use.

Your specific scenario is addressed in this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298884

But that article was made in 2002, so I'm surprised your problem just cropped up after upgrading to SP3.

More in depth information here as well as troubleshooting:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810903

Make sure you read all of the warnings as changing HALs can cause some weirdness, possibly requiring a reinstall of Windows. You should also be able to disable Hibernate through Control Panel->Power Settings

Thanks. I'll give it a read. It has to be SP3 though because as I said it shut down before
and I have not changed a thing in the bios or power setting. I'm curious why
Microsoft changed Standby to Hibernate with SP3. Makes no sense to me since
they are both basically the same thing. Why waste the development hours on
something that does not need changing or fixing. Did you experience the same
thing with SP3 ?
