I just got the update to sp3 from a MS online update.

I said ok lets give this a try so I let it update.
Reboot etc...everything seemed to be fine.

I went to a shortcut and program not found.
What?
then about 10 seconds later it pops up a box and says that it was moved. Would I like it to be put back where it was.

Everything else in that directory was still there but not the exe

WHAT THE HELL...it took my exe files and moved them? Where and why?

CAN MS get any more #$%^ up ?

Is this some vista garbage that they want to put into XP and why?

Sorry I am just sooo mad at that junk bloatware company I can't see straight

Did you search for the .exe, and if so, where did it end up?

I have seen Anti Virus behavior like that. WHat AV do you have? If the AV provides a log, look there to see whether it deleted/quaranteened your app.

So mad you are blaming the wrong people. Microsoft does not do this with updates/service packs as they are specifically written to only update and move system files they are replacing, not random your random exe's. What's more likely to happen is an accidental drag and drop or an antivirus quarantine.

snapster it might be something else. All I can say for sure is I ran the program and it ran fine. The little yellow shield was in the toolbar that is when I found out it was a windows xp update.
I had a disk image( hehe ) form last week so I said to myself lets try it. It did its thing and rebooted. I clicked on the same shortcut as 1 hr earlier and got the file can not be found. It was a generic box that said this file had been moved. do you want us to move it back...no names were on anything.
Funny that a sp update would cause the antivius to move something that worked an hour before.
ps its kaspersky antivirus if that makes any difference.

Settle down beavis. MS and your service pack had nothing to do with this. Unless the file got magically moved to your $ntservicepackuninstall$ folder then you need to direct your caps rage elsewhere.

Lets start with some good ole fashioned thinkin' ...

What program/exe are you talking about exactly?
What path is it in?
Does it appear in your antivirus quarantine? antivirus logfiles?
Did you get an antivirus signature or engine update at the same time?
If you strip permissions and put in a deny on the file does it cause an (possible culprit) application to throw an error?
does your servicepack setup log in %systemroot% indicate it touched your file? (search the text file for your filename)
Apply the service pack but before booting, check the pendingfilerename key in your registry. Is your file listed there?
