XP SP3 & 2003 Domain

Hi all, I am asking this here as I am sure this is a networking issue.....

I have an ASUS A8N5X w\ 939 skt x2 3800+, 2Gb RAM and onboard NV NIC no NV Firewall.

Had no problems on domain w\ around 500 users. I decided a couple of weeks after SP3 release to update, no install issues, booted back up fine, however I couldnt login to the domain, so logged in locally to see what was going on. The NIC had received DHCP address, all correct etc, however I would lose several packets so much so that connectivity was dead!.

Strange, check for driver updates etc, un-install, re-install no difference. Uninstalled SP3, re-installed SP2, no difference, still losing packets.

Wiped the partition, started again, clean build except the NIC still wouldnt work, even though back on SP2 which it worked fine with.
In desparation, I installed a PCI NIC and all okay again....

Monday, I tried again....doh! same issue!!, now 2 NIC no good.....so what is happening, we dont have any 2008 servers so no NAP to worry about but the NIC appears to be crippled....even after a clean system rebuild to only SP2. I checked DHCP settings on the server and no option 43 MS specific vender blah blah, so still no wiser....

Once again, only a new NIC has given me connectivity back to my domain.....

Any ideas guys, I'm a bit lost on this one!!

Grab wireshark and watch the ack/syn packets from that NIC to see if you can find out where they are dropping or not getting out at.

Hi all, I haven'ts been brave enough to roll out SP3 across the local LAN.....so only tested on my PC. 1 other site on our WAN has rolled out but most of his WS's are thin client, but he advised he didnt have any issue's.

Good idea to check hardware fault with Linux Live CD.....as for wireshark, I have looked at it before, however not sure what I am looking for on that, I'm no network engineer. As for the data cable, it works fine with the new NIC i had to install in order to get connectivity again.....

I now have a image to go back to, however am a bit nervous to try again, in case I trash another NIC!

I've rolled out SP3 on about 60 of our machines, all varying from 3yrs old to new. I didn't run into a single issue.

With wireshark you just have to understand how a technology works. If I issue a ping to google, I should get a lookup request and then a DNS response, then get the pings after that. I've jsut been self teaching myself on that piece of software, as it is invaluable when troubleshooting.

There is also a Microsft Network tool that might be more friendly.
