XP SP2 Windows shadow copy volume service

I'm looking to enable the 'restore previous file version' feature on a XP SP2 machine.. I enabled the Volume Shadow Copy service and the MS Software Shadow Copy Provider service, then opened up diskmgt.msc and tried to look for more options to enable but they weren't there.

Is it even possible to enable this feature on a local PC or does the service require Server2003 and what am I missing here?

edit to add- We are running Win03SBS, so I can enable the service if necessary but would have to go through some hoops to do so. We only really need this feature on 1 desktop in the network..

Thanks!

XP doesn't support VSS locally AFAIK except for System Restore. You can restore previous versions of files stored on 2003 servers however.

Vista is the first Windows client OS that supports local previous versions functionality.

Thank you! MS wasn't exactly clear in the documents that I googled up about that and I guessed that was the case. 🙁

How do I enable that on my 2003 server? Just the service and designate a location for previous versions of files?

As stash notes, unitl Vista, "Previous Versions" recovery was only available on shared folders on a Windows 2003 Server. You enable it by viewing the Properties of a drive Volume. You pick the size of the buffer and how often you want copies to be made. It only takes a few seconds to enable.
