XP SP2 RC2 issues, will not install

I attempted to install XP SP2 RC2 this evening on my test rig, and I received an error saying that ATAPI.SYS was in use by another program, kill that program then click "resume" etc.; I was unable to get around the error so I clicked Cancel and the SP install of course failed. Initially I suspected Daemon Tools may have been the culprit so I disabled it & rebooted - same error. I went into MSCONFIG and disabled all startup items except Norton AV 2003 - same error. I ran the Service Pack installer in safe mode - same error.

I checked the ATAPI.SYS file itself to make sure it isn't locked read-only, and sure enough it is not locked and all permissions are correct.

What gives? Any ideas? Has anyone else encountered this?

I encountered the exact same thing. daemon tools is the culprit.

you have to uninstall the dang thing completely, reboot, and then SP2 will install. you can reinstall d-tools afterwards.

Aha! I knew it had to involve D-tools somehow. I will try that and post again with the results.

*edit* Yup, that did the trick. Thanks a ton! :D

yup I had the same problem on all 3 machines I've installed RC2 on. I already submitted a bug report for this.

Emm, I don't have Daetools installed yet I get the same error message. I have alcohol 120% installed but have disabled the virtual drive.

What else could it be?

[edit]

I have RC1 installed...

Try uninstalling Alchohol than installing RC2, let us know what you get.

I thought it might need uninstalling so, yeah I tried that an it worked. Thanks for your help. :)

Just to let all know Daetools 3.46 is not a show stopper for everyone who installs RC2. I have 3.46 installed but not running and encountered no problems because of it.
I did have a problem because of ntoskrnl.exe, had to reload the original to get RC2 to install but I believe this is a known conflict.
