~XP SP2 fresh install
~Biostar TA790GX, AMD X2-7850, 4GB of OCZ Reaper, no overclock, running at 38ºC
~fresh install on defragged WD 250GB SATA boot drive
~checked all my drivers are up to date

Frankly this rig is sucking chunks, overall operating far slower than my old single-core 1800.

Takes 4-5 min's to boot and locks up randomly. Event manager records no errors. Have to hit the reset button.

So far I have not got to anything more intense than short bouts of surfing. Feels like I upgraded to a Pentium.

Ideas please!

It sounds like hardware issue to me.
I would run memtest and Prime95 to rule out at least the ram & cpu.
Have you tried to load the latest firmware or bios from the mobo mfg?
You may try to post this over the CPU forum where you can get better ideas or help.

Thanks for the reply.

I have been struggling to decide its a Windows or hardware issue. I posted also in the Mobo forum.

I'll test the ram. XP is reporting 3.25GB so it is apparently all booting. The board shipped with a BIOS date of 1/13/09.

BIOS:
File Size 1024 KB Upload Date 2009-06-03
Description Support Phenom II and Athlon II CPU
File A78CM525.BST

I tried the latest BIOS (per your suggestion) no notable change. Sometimes it locks in BIOS sometimes in XP after 5 minutes, sometimes just sitting after an hour. Looking like a hardware issue at this point, but the memory all checks out OK even after multiple passes.
