I just Installed SP2 for windows xp on my new computer. When I ran the installer the 1st time, it didn't work because atapi.sys was locked by daemon tools. I canceled and it rolled back the changes and all was good. I uninstalled Daemon tools (at this point xp is fully functional) and installed sp2 again. It installed smoothly and rebooted. It asked for some settings and stuff, then dumped me on my desktop. without a desktop.
Task manager shows no explorer.exe running, and when I try to start it, it flashes on then terminates. everything else works perfectly. I am actually using the computer in question to write this.
I have been using Talisman, but i disabled it before installing sp2. (talisman is an alternate shell for xp that is alot more flexible). Could this be the problem?
I don't like the idea of rolling back sp2 just cuz my stupid explorer won't start. Especially since im leaving on a famly vacation the day after tomorrow!

Uninstall SP2, reboot into Safe Mode, and install it in Safe Mode. You have the full file, correct?

I haveta reinstall sp2? theres gotta be an easier way. what could cause it to flash on and off? the only thing I can think of is that its corrupted. if so, can anyone post/pm/email me a good copy of the sp2 explorer.exe? im.the.mj[at]gmail[dot]com.
I've heard horror stories about uninstalling sp2.
