XP SP2 Home won't install on Medion laptop

This weekend I installed Windows Home on a friends Medion (German) P4 laptop. It was a clean install with the German version of XP that was included with the system. I then struggled through updating and driver installs since I cannot read German. However, when attempting to install SP2 (the German version) either from a direct download or from Windows update the system hard locks part way through the installation. It has done this on 3 or 4 attempts and seems to be at the same point in the installation each time. I am stumped as to what is causing it as the machine seems to be stable otherwise. I also have not been able to get the video drivers for the GeForce To Go 4400 to install. It appears the chipset is a SIS and the video is the GeForce. Medion's website is not too helpful and I cannot find a video driver there. My next thought is to attempt to install SP2 from safe mode. Also maybe take out the extra 256 mb memory module to see if that helps. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Problems with the installation of a service pack are covered free of charge by ms tech support. Give them a ring. Use the regular pay-per-incident line, but explain the service pack thing and you won't even be asked for a credit card.

note: If they drill down and discover some other problem on the system (say service pack can't be installed because there are monkeys in your computer) you would have to open a separate incident to get that fixed.

Give em a shot. They have a huge bag of tricks to fix any sp problems.
