XP SP2 Fresh Install Updates Question

Hi Folks,

Just built a new system and finally ditched Me for XP. During the updates process there are a few "Optional Software" updates I was curious about, namely Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0:x86 & Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1

First, do I need these (I remember seing something about Catalyst drivers needing Microsoft .NET Framework and as I have an x800 working fine I must have Microsoft .NET Framework of some sort.)

Second, do I update 1.1, reload and then upload 2.0 x86? All together?

.NET 2.0 is brand new; 1.1 has been out for quite some time.

The .NET Framework is a lot like the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) from Sun. You'll need it to run applications written using the .NET languages. So, whether or not you "need" to install it really depends on whether you are running programs that require it.

ATI's Catalyst drivers don't require the Framework, but their optional Control Panel does (I believe you can download the drivers with or without the control panel).

.NET-based applications are going to be more and more common, so in my opinion it doesn't hurt to install the framework. 2.0 and 1.1 are very different, so I don't know if 2.0 is backward compatible (i.e. if the 2.0 Framework will run 1.1 apps like the Catalyst control panel). Hopefully someone else can chime in on this.

I think MrChad meant to say "Control Center" as ATI's control panel doesn't require .NET.

Yes, you are correct. The Control Center requires the Framework.

I just installed the latest .NET and now when I run Norton SystemWorks Program Integrity Check, it reports 10 references to msvcr80.dll "cannot access a necessary file".

How bad is this ??
