XP SP2 - Explorer crashing on video file highlight

Hi,

When I highlight a file to copy it, move it, delete it, whatever in Windows Explorer I get a ActiveMovie Window: explorer.exe - Application Error, and it crashes. I guess I've probably got a corrupt video codec or something like that? But how can I identify which one, and how to fix it?

Suggestions welcome!

Does it happen with any movie file, or just a particular extension?

Also, can you open a player and then open the movie from there without incident?

Yeah, it happens with any of the regular extension files anyway, like mpg, mpeg, avi. I can play the movies just fine with WMP10. I don't play videos that much, so I'm not sure about this, but I'd say the problem occured relatively soon after I installed WMP10 beta. I'm not sure because I was also having trouble with my ATI TV video, and upgraded my ATI MMC as well recently.

Ew. Two culprits, neither nice. Uninstall WMP10 if possible. May need to do a System Restore. Also give a shot with Driver Cleaner and get a fresh set of ATI drivers.

I found the culprit, a search for that error took me to a link that talks about DivX 5.2 malfunctioning after SP2. So, you do something to the boot.ini file and run XP in a less protected mode -- then reinstalled DivX and now it's workin' like butta (the only acceptable way to use a computer).
