XP SP2 does not get past loading screen

Usually, whenever I reboot or turn on the computer, right after the XP loading screen, the screen turns black like it should but it never gets past it to go into windows. This is a legal version of XP, not weird stuff. So after that I press the reset button, choose start windows normally and/or last configuration that worked, and then Windows loads.

My guess is that it might be my new SATA HDD. I formatted this HDD like I would with an IDE HDD. Do I need to install the SATA drivers even if I'm not using RAID? I'm new to these kinds of HDDs.

MSI K7N2 Delta2
XP 2000+
9500pro
Audigy 2 Platinum
Seagate 80g SATA 7200rpm (master)
Hitachi 120g ATA100 (slave)

if it's sata...you need to press F6 right when you the installation cd loads. then u need to load the driver using a floppy (included with motherboard usually)...and then you install.

then again, how did you install windows w/o pressing F6? lol

I don't know how I was able to I just went to the screen where I get to make a partition for the SATA drive.

Anyways do you think this problem I'm having with XP could be because I did not install the SATA drivers? Do I have to reformat AGAIN to do this?

You have to reinstall Windows, unfortunately. :(

Not all SATA controllers require a separate driver.

So according to what you said, I might not have to reformat?

Is the driver the answer to my XP problem?

Any ideas since it seems to me that the SATA drivers is not the causes of this problem. I hope this isn't one of those problems where anything could be the causes.

If you did not need F6 drivers when you first installed XP then you will not magically start needing them once you install SP2.

I suggest you roll back the service pack via recovery console to see if that gets you booting. Then call MS before installing it again. They'll basically give a $245 incident for free if you have problems with sp2.

To rollback from recovery console:
Boot with your XP CD, hit 'R' at the first screen.
choose your os installation (likely just hit 1 then enter)
enter your admin password (the builtin administrator's)
go to the $ntservicepackuninstall$\spuninst folder
type the following "batch spuninst.txt"
sit back and wait. It's a slow process - you'll see a couple skipped files, that's normal.

It's highly unlikely.

If you did a new install right now with SP2 slipstreamed media I'm betting you would be just fine. Something else is happening.

You have me a bit confused. In your first post you mention "Usually, whenever I reboot or turn on the computer..." Implying that your computer is setup, and running, and that a problem has surfaced after it has been running fine for some time. I am also under the impression that the problem surfaced when you installed sp2 and that sp2 had not been previously installed.

Is this the case or no?

Before I go on I would like to thank you Smilin for your help so far

Well technically I did not install SP2. XP Pro came with SP2 on the CD so once I formatted and windows was installed SP2 was installed automatically also when windows was installing.

I'm not sure when this problem surfaced, but when I was installing my drivers and softwares and games and such it has made many reboots just fine without this problem where the loading screen finishes but the windows welcome screen does not show. It seems like the computer is locked up during the transition from the XP loading screen to the welcome screen or somehting like that. So I guess the answer to ur question would be yeah the computer has been w/o this problem for a while. A while being several hours between reboots

What ming suggested would be the first move definately.

If that doesn't work, do a repair install. Boot with your XP CD and run setup. At the first screen do "enter" to setup, accept the eula and when it detects your previous installation press "r" to do a repair.

It will preserve your program installs, but reset your drivers, hotfixes and everything back to a base XPsp2 installation.
