XP SP1 HotFix - KB823559

When I had SP1 I downloaded some updates, one of which was HotFix KB823559. However, when I booted up, I received a warning saying that the update couldn't be completed because there wasn't an update.inf file. I installed Service Pack 2 thinking that would take care of it. However, KB823559 still tries to install itself and SP2 won't let it because it's an SP1 fix. Is there anyway I can locate and remove this from the harddrive or registry so it doesn't do this?

I'm also getting a Hardware Wizard popup for a 'PCI Device' which it can't find drivers for. The only PCI devices I have installed are my sound card and modem - both of which are detected in Device Manager and work properly. This didn't happen untill I installed SP2. Thanks for any help 🙂
 
Open up your registry editor (regedit) and browse to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce. Do you see a reference to the offending update.inf file (it should be in RunOnce)? Remove the entry and reboot. That should eliminate the error message.

The PCI device is trickier to troubleshoot. Can you give a complete list of your hardware specs?
 
I dont see any references to the update.inf file in either Run or RunOnce.

Could it be referring to the pci-e x1 slots? I don't have any cards for those. I never had this problem (with the PCI Device thing) in sp1.
 
The PCI Device I can help you fix 🙂

It's a problem I've had myself with a capture card I still haven't found drivers for.

Open up your device manager.

You should see "PCI device" or something similar with a yellow ! in front of it. Like above. Mine says USB scanner, but this is for illustrative purposes.

Right click on it

Click "Disable"

Answer yes to the question

Problem resolved!

You will no longer see the Add new hardware wizard when windows starts up.
 
As for the failed winupdate.

It would help if you could give us the exact error though. I'm assuming the error is "Setup could not find the update.inf file needed to update your system."

So I'll see what I can turn up 🙂

Solution 1:
Go to Start | Run

Type in cmd
At the command prompt, type in the following and press enter at the end of each line

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

Reboot your computer

i tried that. it still pops up when i boot up the system. the system cannot find drivers on the machine. i tried letting it connect to the internet to search for drivers and that was to no avail. :/

i'll try the fix the update when i get home this afternoon. thanks

Odd, that always worked for me. 😕

You might reinstalled your motherboard\chipset drivers.

Are you sure you didn't accidentally click 'no' on the prompt?
 
well i figured out the problem for the 'PCI Device' thing but as for the hotfix i can't seem to figure it out thanks for the help so far. any other ideas? i tried those 3 commands to run in cmd prompt, but the second one didn't work

Try

net stop cryptsvc
ren C:\WINDOWS\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc
 
the commands 'worked' but it didn't solve my problem. thanks for the help thought. a;skdgalkjg this is starting to get on my nerves 🙁
