It's a Gateway 200 laptop running XP sp1. This just started happening;
put the laptop into standby by closing the cover; open the cover later and press the power button.

when it is awake it has quit showing the desktop icons that were displayed before going into standby. Pressing ctl-alt-del to bring up the task manager causes everything to refresh. Have tired F5, that doesn't do it; only ctl-alt-del will redisplay the desktop. I can't think of anything that was added or changed to cause this behavior change, but there must be something, only I can't figure out what is causing the problem.

Well, don't feel too bad.......

I get this with my IBM Thinkpad A22m (P3/800) ***and*** my Dell 4600c (P4/2.4). I am pretty sure it has to do with Windows XP........(imagine that!)......but can't pinpoint it.

I've noticed EXACTLY what you're describing and not a wee bit different. Actually, on my Thinkpad, I can sometimes bring the desktop back by using the "Fn" (function) and the other key (F4 or 4, I think) that switches between the LCD an an external monitor, but my Dell doesn't have that option, so I definitely have to give it the 3-finger salute to bring it back. No biggie, just another glitch, courtesy of Bill Gates!!!

;)

(And I imagine if we find a solution to this, there'll be something else as soon as we install SP2....LOL!!)
