Hello all! I havent posted here in a long tim, but i still read the forums for the great information here. I am getting ready for a new build [my k7s5a is gettin a bit long in the tooth], and I have a question on windows xp install..I have xp home, and a sp1 disc and a sp2 disc..when I do the install do I install sp1 and then sp2? Or will sp2 have all the sp1
updates and fixes? Thanks a bunch! sam

Just install SP2, it doesn't need SP1 installed. Also, I'd refrain from connecting to the Internet at least until SP2 is installed.

SP2 has all the cumulative updates, up to the point of SP2.
The only updates you will need will be "Post" service pack 2 updates (everything released after SP2)

As above. AND do NOT put your computer on the network until SP2 is installed and it has been rebooted. That includes installing from the CD. There are still systems infected with a couple of worms on the internet that will infect your system until it is at least at SP2 level (to be safe.)

Caveat - if you are the only computer behind a reliable hardware firewall blocking all unsolicated inbound traffic, the risk is minimal to none.

To the OP:

Since you mention you have the original XP Home disc, I would recommend the following:

1) Download NLite
2) Download XP Service Pack 2 (standalone, network install)
3) Use NLite to make a custom, SP2 integrated, XP Home install disc.

NLite is very easy to use. It has other things you can do, besides the integration, but leave that for another rainy day. After you finish, you'll have your very own, XP Home w/ SP2 install disc.
