XP Sounds

Hi Everybody,
Here is a weird problem. When I upgraded to WinXP, all my theme icons, background, cursors, etc. worked except for sounds.

However, sound events did not totally stop working. The sounds associated with menus only work when I select from the Start menu. Isn't that weird?

Now for the final wrinkle. I installed SP1 and was having problems, so I installed XP fresh from the CD (previous install was an upgrade from Win98SE). Now, all themes worked--sound and all. For reasons I won't go into, I had to Ghost back to the upgrade. Now my sounds don't work again--except as mentioned above.

Does anyone have a clue why this is happening and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Do you have sounds set up for the events? If you can hear some sounds and not others, maybe there are no sounds for certain events. Check it out in your Control Panel and Sounds and Audio Devices properties. Hope this helps. Can you listen to music and stuff?

Yes, I particularly like my Duke Nukem theme which came on the Duke Nukem 3D CD. The sounds I hear for Menu Popup and Menu Command are all associated with those commmands in the sound properties. And they play the sound when you press the play button in the properties area.

The weird thing is that the sounds I hear on the Start Menu are normal for any menu, but I only hear them on the Start Menu. At work, I use Win2K and the themes work fine there. They also worked after I did the fresh install instead of an upgrade from Win98SE.

So what your saying is that you have a solution and your not using it?

Do a clean install of 2K or XP and than install your theme...

I know of a way to get it working, but I'm more interested in why it only works on the start menu.

I would think that it would work or it wouldn't. Guess I'm just curious.
