XP Sound card problems on IBM ThinkPad

Greetings all. My friend has an IBM Thinkpad 600 running WinXP. He recently upgraded from Win98 and he is having a problem with the sound card. Under the device properties, there is an exclamation point by my WMA audio codec and it says the device could not load (Error 11). XP is not recognizing that he has any sound card installed, but the Legacy sound driver is installed. I have tried uninstalling the device, but it doesn't work. How can I help him troubleshoot this? I tried looking for updated drivers on the IBM site, but that was unsuccessful. He doesn't know what sound card he has, so I think that makes it a little difficult.
