i am writing this post quick, so maybe this has been adressed, but to me XP seems slower in openning app. compared to Win98. I am running XP Pro & theres no way i am going back, XP is much better & MUCH MUCH more stable, but it seems its slower in openning apps like any Office doc, or anything like that.

it does do other things faster though.

i was runing Win98 with a Thunderbird 1.2 & when i got my 1700 XP i re-formatted & installed XP Pro to go with.

it just seems slower in some departments. is this the side effect for being more stable ??

is this correct or am i doing something wrong here ???

thanx

Your rig should FLY. The only thing I would change is your HDD. Next time you get one grab a good 7200 number.
I had this problem as well (my boot up took forever). If you know XP well you can start disabling services or at least set them to manual if you are not sure. If you are REALLY not sure, then go to those XP tweak sites and get some guidance. Many services installed by default by XP, you don't really need.
Use the search function you should find them.
If not then PM me and I will post the links, i'm not subscribed to this thread.

thanx Jimbo. I am not sure what functions arent needed nor how to disable them if their not in the start up folder, i'll PM u.

yes, my HDD is on U DMA 5

is that right for ata 100 ???

just this afternoon has brought me back to a major problem.
i am not too concerned about boot up times as i do have a number of sys tray items. The problem i am getting that XP degrades after some time & in a sudden drop.
the first install it lasted about a week before it suddnly started struggling openning up anything. thought just a glitch & re-formatted, installed again & ran perfect.....for 2 days. this arvo it frooze & bad installing a sinply tax program & now its all slow, REAL slow.

i think i'll make a new post about this.

Your good on that.

Do you have any benchmarking programs?
What programs are you runnning?
When it boggs down, quickly open up Task Manager and check out your memory usage and your CPU Usage numbers.
