XP shuts down on errors

Whenever I encounter errors, for example - copying files and having the 'write protected' error, or burning a dvd and getting an error message with failure, or other random errors, XP just completely shuts down.
This is driving me bonkers as I am trying to back up all my files so as to format. Speaking of which, I can't seem to get into the BIOS when it is booting up. Is this anything to do with the fact that it's a laptop? Any help appreciated.
