XP shortcut pinned to Start Menu

As an example, if I create a shortcut on the desktop and then pin it to the start menu, I no longer want the one on the desktop. But, if I delete the one on the desktop, the one on the Start Menu no longer works.

I just installed some new hard drives and did a clean install of XP so I'm having to try to remember how I did things before and this one stumps me.
