so yeah... installing xp via a boot cd... never had any problems with this system before... installed xp on it before once on one drive... need to install it on a different drive now. all of a sudden it won't even get to the windows install screen... it freezes at the initial "setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration..."

anyone else ever seen this happen??

Had a problem with XP installation as well. Could be a number of things, your win xp CD, or any part of your hardware. You might want to check our this thread, you may find some answers:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=32&threadid=1336055&enterthread=y

you might want to go into specifics, such as system specs, exactly what you did, the copy of xp you have etc...

thujone,

We need a full description of your hardware setup.

Try another Windows XP cd to troubleshoot that as an option...but...

It's most likely a hardware issue that needs to be resolved, at least from all my past experiences.

Windows of all flavors is best installed with a minimal hardware setup, with the rest of the hardware added later.

well it had already been a long day at the office so i just brought the drive home with me to install xp using my pc here at home... worked just fine.

i think it was more than likely an onboard component of the motherboard... which if it failed that REALLY sucks cuz i just bought the damn thing a few days ago.

i'm just gonna plop that drive back into the original system today and hopefully have no problems... if i continue to have problems/fixes today i'll try to update with details.
