XP service pack slipstream question

I am trying to slipstream my XP Pro sp1 copy with sp3. Do I have to slipstream 2 first?

I have actually tried this twice in the past 2hrs on a Vista machine and I've followed the directions to run step 3 as an administrator from Paul Thurrott's guide and still have had no luck.

Anyone have any experiences they can tell me about pertaining to what I am doing wrong? Thanks 🙂

If you are going to slipstream XP, definitely use nLite. There can be issues with things like slipstreaming Dell OEM XP SP1 disks that nLite knows how to handle. And it's a lot easier to use nLite.

I initinally wanted to slipstream my University copy of XP Pro w/sp1 to sp3 so I could install XP Pro on my Gigabyte UD3R P45 board (some compatibility issue with PCI-e 2.0 and anything < or = XP Pro w/sp1) but it wouldn't work. I slipstreamed sp2 successfully and did the install. I used the apps mentioned in Pauls tutorial and they worked great for integrating sp1 w/sp2

I STAND CORRECTED - Q: Does SP3 include everything from SP1 and SP2 or do I need to install those first?

A: Though XP SP3 aggregates all of the previously-released XP fixes, Microsoft now says that you will need to install at least SP1 on XP before installing SP3. The company recommends installing SP2 first as well, though that is not required.

I followed the directions on the link I posted. I had 2 trial and errors trying to slipstream sp3 to a university volume license of XP Pro w/sp1 on a Vista U 64 machine.

Next, I just tried slipstreaming sp2 with my copy and it worked.

The failure is at the CD key part. The correct key will not work; even when you run the integration under admin privileges - well, for me it didn't work.

I seldom slipstream XP to SP3. Although, theoretically, SP3 contains all the updates required, I believe there are prerequsites for SP3 that a brand-new PC might not have. I prefer to slipstream to SP2, run Windows Updates a couple of times, and then install SP3 through Windows Updates.

I've slipstreamed XP Volume Licensed media (RTM) to SP1 and SP2, but I don't think I've ever slipstreamed it to SP3.
