XP Service Pack 3

Here's my current system:

Athlon 3400+ @ 2.5Ghz
2 GB Corsair Value Ram (4x512)
MSI Neo4 Platinum
HD4850 @ stock speeds (fan mod of course)

I'm a little afraid of updating to SP 3 because I don't want it to nerf my ability to play games. Has anyone upgraded with/without issues?

SP3 is more than anything an stability and security patch, it doesn't have new features and it doesn't have major changes.

Install it without fear.

I slipstreamed SP3 into my WinXP CD along with drivers and did a clean install on my workstation. I currently have The Witcher, Crysis, UT3, HL Orange Box, FEAR, Oblivion and Stalker loaded up. The only game I have an occasional problem with is The Witcher. It will crash to the desktop maybe 5% of the time that i'm playing it. The Witcher was well-known to be extremely buggy when it was released. The game is now on official patch 1.3 which has fixed most issues. Most...I guess.

I have no issues in any other game or application which leads me to believe that it's The Witcher that's causing the problem and not SP3 or my system.

Make sure you backup your data to another drive before applying SP3. Even better would be if you could image your OS drive, just in case.

Isnt SP3 basically SP2 with the 500 updates/patches within the last year or so? I installed on all my PCs and notice that I have less updates to do if I install SP3 right away. On my SP2 install disc I have to install around 200 patches and updates.

If everything is working fine w/xp2, i wouldn't bother upgrading. It's not like there's some key feature worth getting. I set the windows update to Ignore it.

If you already have SP2 installed, AND you keep up to date with all the security patches, vulnerability fixes, etc, then there's really no need to upgrade.

But if you're installing from scratch, there's no reason not to slipstream (or install) SP3 right off the bat. You'll save a few hours of downloading Windows UPdates and rebooting after each one installs.

That about sums it up. 🙂

Most of it is just updates that you already have installed. Works fine here for Fallout 1, CoD 4, Source Engine Games, NWN2, NWN1, MOHAA and Quake 1: Thunderwalker.
