XP running SLOOOOOOW

ok, I have a 1.4ghz athlon with a ECS K7S5A. I am dual booting 98 and XP final. In XP, when I try to move a IE window or scroll down, it goes really slow, and my CPU usage goes to 100% Also, when I try to upsize movies to full screen, they run really chunky. Any ideas why this is going so slow? thanks

Shut off some of the eye candy, it will probably fix it. Either that, or update your video card's drivers if they have new ones! 🙂

How much RAM do you have?

See my system rig specs, my system is only a 1.33 gig T-bird and it screams with XP final.

The problem you are describing sounds very much like a driver issue to me. Sound card is typically the #1 culprit of effects like that. Try pulling the sound card and see how it runs.

Did you do the windows update and let MS update you to the correct and latest driver for WinXP? Whatever you do do not load the Liveware 3 crap from Creative.

oh yeah, SB Live sucks a$$ I would dump the card and get something with lower cpu utilization and overall better performance.

<< my system is only a 1.33 gig T-bird >>

*only*?

That's one of the fastest CPUs out there.

Topped only buy the 1.4Ghz TBird, and about 3 speed grades of Pentium4.
Yeah you're awful slow these days. lol.

Anyways, Spike2756, first off don't expect WinXP to run as fast as Win98, it won't.
It's got the NT kernel which is inherently a bit slower (don't worry the security and stability features of the OS more than makes up for the little speed loss), and you have all the extra overhead of the new GUI, System Restore, and a bunch more management stuffs.

But still on a 1.2Ghz with 512MB you should barely notice the difference on your desktop.

The problem you are describing sounds like what happened to me when my Video card drivers got FUBAR and it thought that it was just a framebuffer, without a graphics chip.

So is your video card set up properly?

Other than that I would check other drivers in your system...Sound, Network, everything.

Well, when you go to the overclocking forum and see people with their watercooled 2 gig PIV and 1.8gig freon cooled T-bird rigs that can break 10,000 on 3dmark2001 you get a little more humble.
