I had an Asus P5Q motherboard I kept in a box for years (and a new copy of XP). When I read about support ending for XP, I bought a new E8500 on eBay, 2GB 1066MHz Kingston RAM (from Newegg.ca although I think it may be out of stock now) and a GeForce GT 640.

It played Battlefield 2, Unreal Tournament 3, Unreal Tournament 2004 and UT99 at the highest details etc.

I just discovered however that Windows 7 32-bit plays all of these games without any changes to the computer etc. So, the CoolerMaster K280 case, LG Blu-ray burner (may buy Pioneer next time to get a free burning disc), WD HD and Seasonic PSU I got for the XP machine may end up being used to build a Haswell machine. My Asus P5Q may end up in an old case I have with old HD and old DVD burner.

It may appear odd to other people, but one of the reasons why I wanted to keep an XP machine is to remember the look and feel of it. I still don't completely get the taskbar in Windows 7.

Actually, I already have the case, PSU, HD, optical burner, motherboard, RAM and CPU heatsink for a new machine. I just need to buy the CPU. (Then later I want to change to Nexus fans and add a video card. I may get an SSD when Windows 9 comes out.)

The last time I checked, there were still Asus P5Q mobos on eBay except they're other models like the Turbo and SE. I know you can get E8500 etc. brand new as well. The tricky thing might be trying to find 2GB 1066MHz RAM from a reputable brand name.
