I have a problem with my windows XP in which I would try to open a random video file, it'd open up windows media player, then instantly reboot. Once it reboots it says "windows recovered from a serious error". Some of these videos I've had for a while, they worked fine until just recently. I just downloaded a video from a site and that caused me to reboot... I even formatted my computer but that ended up not helping either. Has anyone had a problem like this before? if so how did you fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

btw my system has p4 2.6c, asus p4p800 deluxe, ATI 9800pro, Sound blaster Audigy LS, 1 gig crucial pc3200 ram, 80 gig Maxtor 7200rpm HD and 1 20gig Maxtor 7200rpm HD (only used to backup files mostly)

Did you capture a memory dump? If not, configure it for a mini dump (right click my computer, properties, advanced, startup and recovery) and then email me the dump and I'll take a look at it (it will be 64k).

Send it to my handle@gmail.com.

If this only occurs during certain .avi files, I would try opening the .avi's in VirtualDub, selecting "Direct Stream Copy" under the Video menu, and save as a new .avi file. See if they crash after that.

I would also recommend reinstalling video codecs. There is a nice little codec pack available at doom9.org called "Gordian Knot Codec Pack."

Send me a memory dump too - bluescreens at comcast dot net. Please reference this URL so I know which issue you're mailing me the dump about. The dump file will be in c:\windows\minidump; just zip up the directory and mail it to me (or just send me the most recent 2-3 files).

Thanks.

Hey mate!
I had this problem some days ago, too. After re-installing the last videocard drivers everything was fixed! Good luck

The dump (the first one) points to P17.sys, which appears to be a Creative Labs driver. Here's a link on what may be a similar issue: http://nl.europe.creative.com/support/forums/thread.asp?thre=41690. There's an entire lot of people commiserating on their Audigies.... I went all the way back to 7/12 - it's very consistent. :)

Anyway, remove the Audigy from your system, remove the drivers and accessory programs from your system, and re-test. I suspect you'll be able to play video flawlessly....without sound. :)

1. Bitch to Creative Labs, but they may not be willing to help you. You can send all those dump files to CL and see what they say. You might try calling them, mentioning what chipset you have, and seeing if there is a fix for computers with that chipset, as sometimes their audio devices have issues with certain MB chipsets.

2. Buy a new audio card. Get a simple audio card without flash-bang drivers. Try to find something for which XP has built-in drivers, and use just those built-in drivers, if you're really pessimistic.

3. Try to reinstall the drivers and hope for the best. Given you've already reinstalled once, that's unlikely to be helpful.

Drivers are an issue, to put it mildly.

But anyway, isn't this so much better than guessing? Memory dumps are great!
