This is a new build, XP with SP2, no overclocking, no temp problems. When I tell XP to "turn off computer", it will shutdown.... then it restarts in a couple seconds. The system is rock stable except for this.
Asus P5GDC-V Deluxe, P4 2.8ghz, 512mb DDR2, new Enermax 430w PSU, new WD 200Gb disk. Sound and video are integrated on the mobo. Not using RAID or SATA.
One recommendation I've seen for this problem is to disable the XP feature of restarting the comp after an error - did that, no change. Nothing is showing up in Event Viewer. No BSOD.
When I tell XP to turn off the computer, it goes through the "Windows is shutting down" screen, I see a good bit of HDD activity for a few seconds, then the HDD activity stops. The floppy light comes on for about 8 seconds. Then the HDD gets busy again for a few seconds. Eventually the system will stop and after a few seconds it restarts.
Only one time in the week since I built it did it actually shut down normally and stay turned off. I can't think of anything different or unique about that particular PC session, though.
The only other XP machine I've seen is a laptop and it shuts down very quickly compared to this one. Don't know what reason it would have to access the floppy - don't know if that's a factor or not.
Any troubleshooting ideas?
