I am trying to fix a computer for a friend who was getting a black screen error message about system32/config or something similar. I did chkdsk /r from Bart's PE (since I didn't have the admin password and couldn't reset it) and that didn't work. I proceeded with a repairitive install, but it won't go past 39 minutes. The screens change every few seconds about the features, but nothing futher happens. I have tried upgrading the BIOS, putting in an AGP video card instead of using the onboard one, removed all PCI cards, extra CDROM, zip drive, etc. and nothing seems to work. Any ideas? The system is a P4 offbrand store bought machine with XP Home OEM. The hard drive tested fine with an advanced DFT test and the memory stick in the machine (512) tested fine as well (though it also had a 1GB chip in it that tested bad). Getting the data off is not a problem as I have a Ghost image that I made. I would like to know how to try and finish the repair without a format.

im not sure where, but i know microsoft has a link to manually copy and replace the old registry so a new one is there, ive done this once with great results, check out the how to fix a corrupted registry on microsofts site...if that doesnt work then maybe you should just reformat and get all nice new drivers.

Thanks for the reply. I will check into that, but won't making a new registry not allow me to run the programs that were installed?

Disconnect all harddrives and optical drives that you do not need for install.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have used the exact same XP CD before without any problems. It has no scratches as far as I can tell and begins the initial file copy at the blue screen without any problem. I can't get into Safe Mode but I can boot Bart's PE if need be.
