my home computer is running XPpro, as well as my traveling computer. My home PC is connected to the internet through a cable modem.

question.....I am wondering if I can dial in to my home PC from my traveling PC (when I'm on the road) and connect over a phone line (V.92 modem to V.92 modem). If so, I would be interested in doing a little file sharing, but mainly, I would want to remotely connect to the internet, over a phone line through my cable modem at home. Is this possible? This would prevent me from having to use a dial-up service provider in addition to my home cable service.

Secondarily, would it be possible to command my home PC to call my remote PC to creat the connection? I have unlimited long distance at home, so this would also save me lond distance fees.

Thanks

I dont think you can run xp with ras services... you might need to start HERE For some general info on setting up a ras (remote access server) server. You will have to register (free) to read that though...

edit: yes, you can set up the NT server for a 'server call back' option, so that you could take advantage of your unlimited long distance, when dialing in from your laptop.

You can do RAS on XP pro and have 1 each (dial in, vpn and direct (LPT,serial, IR)) concurrent incoming connection.

Open Network Connections from control panel.
Under Network Tasks, click Create a new connection, and then click Next.
Click Set up an advanced connection, and then click Next.
Click Accept incoming connections, click Next, and select the modem, click next and where you select the users to allow remote access for if you choose proporties for the user you can configure call back options.
