XP Remote Desktop Versus pcAnywhere

Which is a better way to remote control an XP Pro machine running at an office LAN using broadband Internet, XP's built-in Remote Desktop or Symantec's pcAnywhere? The most important thing is reliability followed by performance.

remote desktop is about 100x better than vnc or pcAnywhere. I've even used it through dialup, and it was surprisingly responsive. The server has to be a xp machine, but you can connect to it using any machine with a ms os, you'll just have to download the client.

Remote Desktop/Terminal Services is an excellent way to remotely admin a box. However, with Terminal Services, you aren't actually "at" the desktop -- you just get a session. For most things, this session is enough, but for some, only the real desktop would do. I prefer Remote Desktop over PcA from now on. If I must install something, VNC is it.

vash, are you sure about that? I thought with Remote Desktop you get your own desktop just like you do when you log in locally to the machine?

Remote desktop is a great tool. Some things simply will not work under it though (Like adding an AppleTalk printer). These things must be done at the console.

If you read my post, I was talking Terminal Services when I made that statement. With Remote Desktop, it *is* the desktop.

i'd use remote desktop except it only works with xp machines. not 2k or 98se.

Your correct, you don't get a seperate session in XP, you get your normal desktop. You get a seperate session when remote admining a 2k server (or .net server, although you can now attach to the console session also).

are you looking to just have access to files or do you want to be able to run programs remotely as though your running them from the local machine ?
VNC works great for the later

I'm using Remote Administrator from HERE.

I found it to be much smoother than VNC...

i use tightvnc since it has cross platform capabilities via java enable webbrowser...if you need files just set up an ftp server on ur machine.
