XP Remote assistance

So im trying to connect to a friends xp box thru xp remote assistance. they are in a dorm, and thus have some sort of horrible firewall setup. I'm having them email me their assistance invite. After opening it in notepad, it seems it is sending me their private ip address in their dorm. So, we created a vpn thru hamachi, and i changed the ip in the invite to the one that hamachi assigned. it now seems to connect okay, and it gives them the prompt to let me connect, but the screen that is supposed to show their display is always black, and after some set amount of time (about a minute) it automatically disconnects both of us. every time. anyone know could be going on?

It's going to be much easier to use VNC.
Google UltraVNC or RealVNC. I prefer UltraVNC myself.
