XP Protection fault

Ok my friend is running XP (home i believe) and right after booting past bios he gets a general protection fault error, can't even press F8 to get into safe mode.

I booted from the CD to go into recovery console. I press R to repair, then select the windows directory and it just reboots.

Any help?

Most likely a hardware problem, undo any overclocking that's being done and check the memory.

i reset bios to default, nothing. Memory check goes fine upon bootup.

Not that memory check something decent like memtest86.
