XP Professional Running Slow When it Shouldn't!

Here is the deal. I just built a Pentium 4 2.4 with 128mb Video Card, 512 DDR, DVD Drive, CD Burner, and 7200RPM 40gb HD. I had this system working not too long ago and when we tried installing a game it gave an error screen and we couldn't get past it. So I decided to erase and start with a clean slate and that is when it started to get slow. This system should run XP fine. When I reinstalled XP there are no problems exept for it took hours instead of the estimated 39 minutes. I have already tried swaping out the DDR for SD and using different HardDrives but the same thing happened. Once installed XP boots up extremely slow from the xp welcome screen it took about 30 min to load the start menu. I have no Idea what is going on. Help ME Please!!!!

It's going to be tough to say exactly what is going on..... I would start by removing all unecessary cards and only one stick of ram. I would also check to be sure that all parameters are correct in the bios for the drives and the ram in the machine. I would reset the cmos jumper and go from there.
