Here is the deal. I just built a Pentium 4 2.4 with 128mb Video Card, 512 DDR, DVD Drive, CD Burner, and 7200RPM 40gb HD. I had this system working not too long ago and when we tried installing a game it gave an error screen and we couldn't get past it. So I decided to erase and start with a clean slate and that is when it started to get slow. This system should run XP fine. When I reinstalled XP there are no problems exept for it takes hours instead of the estimated 39 minutes. I have already tried swaping out the DDR for SD and using different HardDrives but the same thing happened. Once installed XP boots up extremely slow from the xp welcome screen it took about 30 min to load the start menu. I have no Idea what is going on. Help ME Please!!!!

Did you install the chipset drivers? Maybe a bios update? CD Rom going bad?

your motherboard could be messed up. how long ago did you get it? if it is still within the return period see if you can swap it out.

Check the bios to see if any cpu cache levels have somehow been disabled, or maybe some other setting.

I agree with Canterwood. Check the L1 and L2 cache in your BIOS and make sure they are enabled.

[edit] reply was a little too late.....
