Which of these should I run on my newly acquired A7M266-d and dual 1900s? 😀😀😀😀😀😀
I'll just ditto that. I use 2K Pro but I don't have a digital cam or scanner.Originally posted by: jliechty
Use whichever you are most comfortable with. I'd pick Windows 2000 Pro if it's going to be a workstation type machine, because that OS is "lighter," but XP Pro might be better if it's going to be a general purpose box (i.e. to be used with digital cameras, scanners, etc.).
I had a K6-2 400MHz system a long time ago (well, I still have the processor, but the motherboard is dead), and it came with the heatsink attached. IMHO, it would be wasteful to use Arctic Silver 3 or something like that on it. 😱Originally posted by: LyNx01
On a side note I also received a k62 400 mhz processor and mobo today, can I just use generic thermal grease? Do I need to cover that whole monster heatspreader?

Win2K for sure... I am not an XP fan at all.
give it loads of memory and it will run kickass.

Nothing says I wont reformat. 😛Originally posted by: Confused
I'm running XP on all my machines, even my K6-2 380MHz laptop, and they are all quite nippy. But now that you've got 2k on there, then I guess my opinion on this doesn't count 😉
I too would use the Mathguy service handler, as that detects and installs multiple CPU systems, as well as monitoring the client, and restarting it if it hangs. It's alsp useful if you use multiple users on the box, as it will load up before any users are logged on. I don't see any real reason why you shouldn't use the Mathguy install on ANY system you run SoB on! 😉

How much would you consider "loads" of memory?

I'm a big fan of Win2KPro, but I have a client that uses XP, and he (a dentist) just bought an expensive digital camera and flash card reader. He wanted to be able to take pictures of his patients teeth, then copy them to CD-ROM so he can stick the CD-ROM in their case file. After he tried loading the software that came with the card reader, (which didn't work) I used the built in features of XP to create a simple process to read the pics and burn them to CD. It was painless and smooth, and even he can use it. I was impressed by how easy it was to use.

i just need to remember to snag some rj45s and cat5e from work and plunk it out in the living room and let it crunch on somethin. not seti though. too slow for it...so im open to suggestions.
oh and back on topic. XP professional would be my choice. i use it on my home rig and i likes it.
will run for a week straight without a hitch.
