Ok, so I just bought XP to install on my computer--I had 98se before this. My parents really like it and want me to install it on their computer.

What will happen if I use the CD key I used for my install? Does XP allow for the same CD key to be used on multiple computers? Or is there some problems that will occur?

Just wanted to make sure before I install it on my parents computer.

Thanks,

`K

It will work for 30 days. So short of reinstalling once a month, you need another key.

That would be a violation of Microsoft's License Agreement. One key per computer. If you want to install XP on another computer, buy another key.

Or can you just buy CD keys??

Thanks,

You can only buy a license (versus actual CD media + license) with the Volume license edition of WinXP Pro. It's only sold to corporations, schools, government, etc. So yeah you need to buy another copy. If you can swing an educational discount get XP through a college bookstore, or buy an OEM copy maybe.

I read recently that MS has a deal that allows you to buy a limited number of additional licenses for their OSes without buying a full-blown copy of using a corporate Select-like agreement. You can only get an extra two or so, but they are cheaper than retail.

Phone the 1-800 number and say that you had to reformat your HD and that obviously your old key won't work anymore because it has already been used to activate. They will lead you through the steps and you'll be able to activate XP on your parents PC.

This is unreal. Come on folks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just buy the CD at Newegg! If anything happens to their computer you will have a legal copy for them.
