XP problem with startup items

Dell computer with XP Home, when I run msconfig and check the startup tab to see what's running, it's completly blank, I did an upgrade install, but that didn't fix it. I installed a few programs and they don't come up in the startup either. I've seen that tab with all the boxes unchecked before, but never blank, Anyone have an idea what could be causing this?? thanks

Have you used a third party software to verify windows has lost placement of its startup items? I rarely ever use MSConfig because it is sloppy (leaves entries there by just reming them out). I use a free program called JV Power Tools 1.3 but I?m sure there are others out there. This way you?ll see if its just MSConfig that is messed up or your install. Hope that helps.

haven't tried that yet, I will. I'm afraid it's a XP issue, the icons aren't coming up in the tray either.
