XP Pro won't take my cd key

I purchased an IBM r31 that came with a XP Pro COA on the bottom and recently the mobo crapped out on me. I was hoping that I could use the COA with my XP disk and install it on my T22. Well my disk didn't work, so I found the procedure to change the disk image to accept OEM coa's, and volume license coa's (had to make 2 more xp cd's). Neither of these worked so I'm thinking I'm out of options since my original disk was a retail version.
Is there anything on the COA that will tell me what type of XP cd I need that will accept my key or is there anyone else that knows how I can use my coa to install xp?

🙁 I thought that the CD/key used on one motherboard would no longer work for anyother type of motherboard....or atleast MS wouldn't let you activate XP for the new type mobo. I may be wrong though...

You are "probably" correct. Certain of the OEM versions are sold so heaviliy discounted that they are "one system only" for the useful lifetime of the original PC. For those, the only MB change that would work would be an exact replacement if/when the original MB failed under warranty. The license for those differs from other Windows licenses.

The more-usual OEM versions involved with MB swapping situations aren't so limited. For this OM, however, his odds of reuse are heavily weighted against him. He probably won't be able to transfer the OS to a different system.

🙁

Your install disc is probably tied to the BIOS and then the key that you have on the COA is tied to the install disc. I'm not sure if you could take the IBM XP Key and use it on a different machine (motherboard). Same is true of Dell, HP.....
