I'm trying to install this os and have run into a glitch: Everything seems to work fine until I plug in my network cable, which my machine sees. This will cause everything to freeze. My mouse (logitech MX 700) ceases to work until I unplug my network cable, then everything is fine. The whole install seemed to be a bit buggy, the mouse was choppy and the letter prompts wouldn't work. All this with the network cable unplugged. Now it works fine, until that cable is plugged in. Anybody have any ideas? Maybe start over?

yeah, I've got a router on this thing. Kept the network cable unplugged while I was loading the os, but when I plugged it in to go to microsoft and panda the thing just froze. The whole install seemed buggy, with the network cable unplugged.

I seem to have gotten it. Did a reinstall w/the network cable plugged in and it seems to work fine. Got into Microsoft update and heading to Panda next. Hope I can beat the worms.

Why not install with SP2?

Or at least enable the Internet Connection Firewall (aka Windows Firewall on a SP2-equipped system). Hit your Windows Help if you need a hand finding where to turn on ICF.

But yeah, I would try to have SP2 ready on a CD when doing a fresh installation if there's a worm threat. Your router should keep them at bay from the outside, but if you had, say, a worm-infected computer on "your side" of the router, it's not going to protect you from that.

I got online and downloaded Panda, adaware, spybot, and spywareblaster. I've still got to activate, so I can update, but I got sidetracked downloading some av drivers from Chaintech. Everything seems to be working ok, so far, except for when I scroll it looks like waves hitting the seashore. Can't remember the fix for that right now so I'll wait and see what the drivers do. This is a big step for me. Been using ME for a few years now w/o any real problems. Anybody have any good links for "tuning up" XP?

Waves hitting seashore :) Sounds like you need to install your motherboard's chipset drivers, reboot, then install your video drivers and reboot again.
