XP Pro - too many IRQ 11's - how to fix ??

OK, I have figured that I should have loaded XP Pro with administrator privileges - to be able to change resources in device manager. I did not, and what I have now is I have eight (8) IRQ's that are all # 11 - including video & sound & modem. Many IRQ's are not being used - such as 2,5,7...

I have swapped cards to other PCI, to no avail. Seems to run pretty good now, but in the last install it really slowed down after a spell - figured it had to be due to all this on IRQ 11.

Is there a way to set myself as administrator without reloading it all? Is there another option I am not seeing?

Thanks for any and all help.

Here's some info that may help out: FAQ item

By the way, what PCI devices do you have, and what motherboard? I can suggest an arrangement once I know what board and what devices.

This is an MSI Pro 2 - a few years old now. I have two PCI devices - an Actiontec modem, and a Vortex soundcard.

With 98SE I could go in and modify the resources. I guess that since I did not set this up with an admin/password - that I cannot do that with XP Pro.

I have 98SE on a second HD, but disconnected it for the install - as I thought that might have led to some problem with teh IRQ's at install. This is the third time I have done the re-install.

Thanks

Did you read the FAQ that was linked above? What you are seeing is totally normal and there is no reason to change things unless you are experiencing problems.

Yes, I did.

I will go with the flow for now. If it looks like I am going to have a slowdown, I will make the change to 'REGULAR PC' and then try to adjust the resources.

Actually - I think a lot of my problems have stemmed from the odd way that I had 98SE on the 2nd hard drive (which was originally the main HD). I now have that HD disconnected, and when I hook it back up, I will set it up so the system does not recognise 98SE at all - for a spell, anyway. Getting this HD with XP set up right all the way first.

Does seem to be doing really good now.

Thanks

log in as Administrator - if it isn't listed in login list @ start goto Regedit (or regedit32) + goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList

Create (if not present) a new Value: right click New > DWORD [REG_DWORD] Value > name it Administrator > OK > double-click on it > check the Decimal box > type 1 > OK.

voila you may logon as administrator

Thanks for the info. I will keep that in mind about logging in as the admin.

Right now, all is loaded back and she is doing just fine - with all the IRQ 11's. I made a print out from Tweaktown on 'Reformat to Relax', and I am going to fine tune her - but slowly.

Interesting how we call those things we love as feminine !!
