XP-Pro Sp2 Hangs at "Windows is Shutting Down"

Whenever I go to shutdown or restart, my computer hangs at the "Windows is Shutting Down" screen. It takes a minute or two and it will then do the deed but the wait is very frustrating when doing updates and so forth. It's a relatively new build but I can't seem to remember at what point this started happening, which I know is pretty lame. For some reason I am suspicious of my HP 7310 All-In-One, although in looking at their support pages nothing sticks out as a culprit. I have disabled printer services before shutdown and it hasn't helped. I suppose I could just delete the drivers and software but re-installing this thing is a long pain in the ass so I thought I would check with you guys first. I've rummaged around here in past topics and done a Google search but haven't found the magic bullet for this problem. Any thoughts?

I don't think that you would have anything causing it to stop then, except if you have the special "Clear Page File Before Shutdown" feature enabled.
Once it goes to that "Windows is Shutting Down" prompt, everything is pretty much out of memory, so there is nothing to hang up with.

It could be that your disk-based page file is so fragmented, that it is having trouble backing up the data in it.
Get Raxco's Perfectdisk trial version, run it and do an off-line defragment, and check the MFT and Page File defragmentation options.

I used to have the same problem, until I did that, and once I did the problem went totally away.

Here is what I would do.

1. Disable all startup items. Start->run->msconfig->uncheck load startup items. Reboot, and then try shutting down.
2. If that doesnt work just simply unplug the usb from your printer and try.

Let us know if this helps.

Catalyst Control Center made my shutdown times significantly longer. Easily remedied by either using ATI Tray Tools or disabling "cli.exe" from initiating during startup.

Thanks for the input. Sorry, I've spaced on how to get to event viewer. Let me know and I'll take a look. Regarding the paging file, I don't have that clearing function enabled and run Diskeeper in the background so all of my drives are defragmented and I'm pretty sure that's not it. I'll recheck those settings to make sure. I haven't yet tried disabling start-up stuff but I'll put that on the list. Whether or not it helps this problem I think I'll go ahead and disabled the Catalyst Control Center on start-up anyway. It doesn't really need to start when Windows starts. Thanks guys.

Do you have any USB devices plugged in besides a keyboard and mouse? That is usually the source of a hang on shutdown.
