XP Pro shutdown issue

Senior member
Just got a new 'puter and installed a fresh xp pro sp2 system. The system will hang at shutdown if the printer or anything else (external cdrw or harddrive) is connected to the usb ports. If i turn the printer or other device off or unplug it, a few seconds later xp shuts down. It correctly identifies anything i connect to the usb port. Looking for suggestions? I'm still searching for answers.
Thanks
