XP Pro Repair Install Problems

After changing video cards on a friends PC I did a repair install of XP Pro cause the PC would lock up quite a bit and I couldn't figure out the cause.
The repair install went ok, but now something keeps trying to install itself after the desktop appears during boot up. It says Insert the 'Status' disc and click ok.
I think it has to do with windows installer, so I google it and search microsoft for answers, but none seemed to work.
Is there anyway to fix this short of doing a complete reformat and fresh install?

thanks

Try this. Put your XP disk in the drive. Click on start then Run. Type sfc.exe /scannow
There is a space before the forward slash. Click on OK and let it run. This is a system file checker and should correct any missing or corrupted files in Win XP.

It sounds like something else is trying to install itself. Are you able to move around freely once it is booted into Windows? Try and check and see if you can see the actual name of the program that's trying to be installed. This is a common issue when you do a repair install. Sometimes I even get this during the repair installation portion.
