XP pro reboots continuously at startup - why?

Hello all. The other day I posted the following and received a few replies:

"OK, I am in the process of re-installing XP Professional on a system with an 80 Gig that previously had XP pro on it - but the HD had an "Unmountable Boot Volume" error that I could not recover from. Well, I wiped the drive clean and reformatted it. I then boot from the Win XP CD and the blue screen comes up with the message that it is loading all the required files. OK, so everything is fine, right? Well, the message "loading Microsoft Windows" comes up (as always) and then after about 10 seconds or so the screen goes black and the system goes into a coma forever. I try this again and again but the same thing happens. I then tried installing Win 2K pro and the same thing happens.

I know I am NOT unique and am hoping that at least some users have encountered and successfully conquered this prob. PLEASE let me know how. Please reply or send PM if you can help. Thanks .... "

Well, I read in another forum that a user had replaced their vid board and got XP to install, so I tried it (GF 4 - 4200 to GF 2 MX) and I was then able to install my copy of XP pro.

Now, I have installed Office and a few other apps and re-installed my 4200 vid board and now my system keeps rebooting on me! I am having problems finding anything relative to this issue in the MS knowledge base. If anyone has had this prob before please help!

Try putting in your regular vid card (4200) and when XP starts loading hit F8 and boot in to safe mode. Then install the latest video drivers available for your card. See if that helps.

I agree... SAFE MODE is your friend. Don't forget to use Safe Mode With Networking so you can have a connection to download drivers with (if you need them)...

Maybe your video card is dead. I had a GeForce 2 Ti200 that would work fine until I installed the drivers and restarted. After that I would get BSOD's at every bootup.

As I remember last night I tried safe mode and it also rebooted.

As for my vid cards, both work fine. I am beginning to think I have a software (driver) incompatibility issue. Oh how I love Microsoft operating systems. It drives a soul to the Mac world (heaven forbid!). At times like this I just love to visit my fave corporate complaint site: http://www.f---microsoft.com/. Please excuse the language. This is a time when I need to vent this absollutely horrible job of an operating system.

Dud,

Are you on the latest BIOS for your motherboard? Is your system overclocked in any way? Are your memory settings agressive?

Jrez, you hit the nail on the head. I proceeded to update my MB bios and now, for the most part, everyhting is fine. The only exception is the performance of my vid card. Prior to re-flashing my bios I was getting 9K 3dmarks when I would benchmark my system. After flashing I am getting around 7K, with the newest 40.XX detonator drivers. BTW GET the lastest drivers. I tried them on an old GF2 mx board and, with everyhting else being even, the 3D marks went from about 1900 to 2600! I was amazed! this is a 37% increase in vid performance without overclocking! GET THEM.
