XP Pro & Norton's System Works 2002...weird things are happening!

Hello everyone.

I'm running XP Pro on my rig. I have Norton's System Works 2002 Professional Edition installed on my machine. Whenever I run Anti-Virus to check my system, halfway through the scan or so, I get a blue screen saying "A major error has occured. Windows will now shut down your computer for its protection....blah-blah-blah" and it shuts down and re-boots itself. Tried it three times last night...couldn't get one scan to finish and got that blue screen every time (Thought XP was supposed to have gotten rid of that thing!)

Also, I've lost my screen saver...the damn thing will not run, not matter what settings I choose, the type I pick...XP's screen saver will not run. What the fluck! It didn't use to be like this...earlier on, after the install of the Norton's suite, my screen saver worked fine and up until last night, I could scan for viruses whenever I liked. But now, have no idea what to do.

I need the protection of Norton's due to my broadband hookup, file sharing, etc. But, would like to know what exactly is causing my rig to act this way.

Any help or suggestions would be great!

first thing you need to do is find the exact error you are getting. If the computer automatically reboots after the bluescreen, dig around - there is an option to turn it off, so you have time to read the error. Then go to MS's site and check for the particular code. If none are located, try re- installing Norton. Worse case scenario, do a Windows repair, which is basically a re-install keeping all your files and config settings.

I also had a problem with Norton System Works 2002, and wound up dumping it altogether. If you want to know the exact problem, run %windows%\system32\verifier.exe, and select the option 'create standard settings -> Automatically select All drivers installed on this computer. Follow the rest of the panels, and then reboot. Your system will be sluggish, but it should give you a BSOD in pretty much no time, and you will be able to see which one of the Norton DLLs is causing your problem. Then you can go do a web search for it. I found my problem on the web, but I never found a fix on Norton's site, so I got rid of System Works.

It's more likely a bad driver (i/o) or similar issue. NAV scan pushes heavy I/O thru the system as it checks all the files. Try running the built in ntbackup and backup the drive to a file, see if you get the bluescreen during that I/O also.

I dumped Norton System Works after reading horror stories in the reviews and opinions, and switched to Ontrack SystemSuite 4. It won't eat your files unless you tell it to! Read the review at www.pcmagazine.com.

Cleaned up my registry in XP getting rid of garbage I couldn't believe, checked the hard drive for errors and then defragged it with nary a hiccup. It even has a firewall which worked first time without a hitch! Made XP load and shut down faster except for the firewall. That's my kind of utility.

NSW worked good in Windows 98 but in XP it leaves a lot to be desired!

Best of luck to you.

Flight: did you sucessfully manage to un-install systemworks without a glitch?? I have tried doing that, and found that Norton had it's fingers in too many things- and always caused problems on an un-install.
BTW- Systemworks 2002 on 2KPro, works without a hitch.
