All was running perfectly fine. Then, I decided to install my HP DeskJet 952C printer. I opted for HP's updated driver rather than the one included with XP, because it offers more features and functionality. After installing the driver, my printer has been working perfectly fine.
But, each and every time I reboot, as soon as the desktop appears, I am prompted by the Found New Hardware wizard. Of course, there is no new hardware. If I click on it to see it through it tells me there has been an error and the printer might not function correctly.
If I just cancel it out, I'm told the same thing. I can't kill the beast. I've even tried repairing XP by installing it over itself. Still, the beast beats on. I'm not receiving any errors in the Events Log that could help, either. There has not been any other problems, performance of the OS has not been affected. But I want to stop that damn hardware prompt. Any suggestions?

HA! I have the exact same problem. I haven't gotten around to figuring out how to fix it cause I rarely reboot so it doesn't really bother me.

Try looking in Device Manager and see if there is any "Unknown Device" listed. If there is one, remove it and see what happens.

Go in and remove the printer completely as well as the software. There is a specific procedure for installing the new H-P software. It involves having the printer removed. Install the software, and then when it is in, you hot plug the printer in the USB port and it will almost install itself. Here is what I got by email from H-P: ( I finally got it all working.)

<DIV>The 4.3 version of the driver for your Deskjet 990Cse in Windows XP, is full featured and has the features such as estimated ink level indication, status messaging, etc.</DIV>

bozo, interesting that you would have the identical problem. Did you have a problem with the install of the printer driver? Hmm...I think we are about to uncover an issue with Windows XP.
vetteguy, nothing in Device Manager indicating a problem of any kind.
corky, I know what you mean about installing the HP drivers. They are a real pain in the ass. Anyway, I did the procedure as HP describes below. After the installation of their driver is when the weirdness with the New Hardware Wizard began.
Thanks for the input, guys, but I'm back to square one, it seems.

might be a Little off topic, but my Dad has a HP PSC500 (Printer Scanner Copier) and when we upgraded to XP Pro, guess what? Scaner didn't work. Weeeeeeeeeeeellllllll, in the program that came with it it didn't. downloaded 2000 version but, still didn't work! Looked around and found MS Photo Editor from Office 97 used it to scan... and it worked! Funny how MS software five years OLD works with hardware but the vendors own software doesn't.... had same problem with VoodooTV FM and gave up trying it to work and banged in my old 233 K6 machine with 98 and (ironically) Voodoo2
