XP Pro long startup and shutdown

I have Windows XP Pro on a 1.4 Ghz Thunderbird with 40GB HDD, 512 PC133 SDRAM, 32MB Video Card, and a K7S5A MB. The machine used to be super fast, but lately it takes a while to startup, and it takes about 10 minutes every time I shut it down. If anyone else has come across this problem, or has any ideas for me I would appreciate it very much. Thanks ahead of time.

Any registry hacks lately?

2 in the past 6 months. They worked for the first 5 months though. Would it take that long for them to hose my system?
