XP Pro laptop HDD to SSD

The laptop is an older Dell D531 with a 5400rpm Seagate. I'd like to do a direct copy of whats on there to a faster drive, preferably a SSD. I know its best to do a clean install but its not an option. The software we use for work was installed by an outside source and they charge a hefty fee to reinstall.

Would a SSD work? I was looking at the 80GB X25-M @ TD.

Would something like a Momentus XT or a straight mechanical drive be easier to transfer to?

After reading some more ssd is gonna be a pain to deL with, I'll just pick up the momentus xt that's on sale.

Momentus XT will give you good value for the $$$. I had them in all my notebooks, and when I changed to SSD in the newest, the SSD's boot/load time for WIn 7 was anly about 10 seconds faster. In the real world of work, that is not hugely significant.

The XT will also improve with each boot cycle as it learns your initial starting druthers.

My OS XTs were 320GB. I kept a 500GB XT as data drive in concert with a Sammy 830 256GB SSD OS drive. It's a good c ombo.

What are your concerns? I think you're making a mistake, personally.

Cloning a Windows partition to an SSD and then aligning it tends to break boot.ini. Not sure why.

I tried it 2-3 times, was able to get the SSD to boot, but not reliably. Gave up and wiped/reformatted.

Its a lost cause at this point, the boss man 86'd the upgrade for now.
I feel your pain. When I took this job here the boss said I could upgrade our entire infrastructure. Took 6 years before I was finally given the green light to start lol.
