XP Pro keeps freezing during install

For whatever reason my computer keeps freezing during win xp pro install. It will get to the point where it asks you if you want to repair windows or do a new install and usually freezes.........for whatever reason some times after restarting the computer a few times it will go further into the install process and even some times it will install completely.......but once windows is installed the computer will freeze or restart itself after it is left unattended to. So, in other words it seems to work fine as long as you are using it, but if you leave it alone it messes up.

Any ways, I have tried a different power supply, tested my memory, tried a different hard drive and even had my motherboard switched out through abit's rma dept. What else could possibly be causing this problem?? I am out of ideas.

I had this same problem with my son's computer 3 weeks ago. I swapped his mom board for an ECS [never again] KT-600 and an AMD 2800 and pc3200 512mb of ram. Turns out i had to buy a new, beefier power supply [based on amperes NOT watts] and had to use one of my pc2700 sticks of ram. Once i swapped those out, XP would finally let me install it. Once it was installed i swapped out my PC2700 for the orignal PC3200 512mb and everything is running now.

Good Luck,

I doubt it is my power supply........it is an Antec that is only a year old....I think it is the SL400 if i remember correctly.

It sounds like you are trying to install windows 98 on the same hard drive as xp. You must completly
reformat your hard drive using the xp disk and only put the 98 disk in when asked for.
