XP pro installation not copying files... stops at 94%-97%

I am a long time reader of anandtech, but this is my first post. I have installed XP pro on many systems many times and have never had this problem. After I boot up with the cd, delete the partition, create the partition (just one), then format (not quick) the installation process continues by copying over the installation files... All of that goes well until I get to the late part of the copying files..... I then get a message that says something like "The file you are trying to copy is corrupted" or "The file cannot be copied, there may be something wrong w/ your cd." The thing is, I have tried 2 different XP pro cd's... and they have both worked many times on this same computer for installation... why now would they both give errors at the same point durring "copying files" (b/4 the actual install even occurs)? I've re-installed windows so many times... Here are the things I have tried to fix this new problem.

1. Delete the partition, format drive again.......... yada yada yada, same error on a different file each time
2. Taken the hard drive to a different computer and deleted the partition and reformatted (NTFS of course)
3. I have tried 2 different cd roms, with 2 different xp cd's.... all yield the same problem.
4. I have tried every combination of bios settings... from cpu voltage to memory speed, even fail safe defaults..

Bear in mind that these cd's are not scratched and I used them just last week on a successful installation...

Anyone who gives advice that fixes this will be paypal'd $15..... trust me i'll pay up, this is a huge headache, I spent 4 hours on it last night... Thank you for your help in advance!

**edit** I am using a 400w power supply... just in case that is relevant.... I have also tried unplugging and removing all devices except, video, cd rom, hard drive.

I had a similar problem when trying to install XP once. It turned out one of my RAM dimms was bad, so when the XP installation was loading stuff into memory, when it accessed the second dimm it would crash.

So, I'm not sure if that could tie into your problem, but like I said, that's what was wrong with mine. If you think that could be it, try testing your RAM and see if that could be the problem.

Otherwise, I don't know.

Format your hard drive and run a surface scan on it. As Lucky9 said.

Same problem happened to me, and the only thing that would make it work was when i copied the entire CD of XP to my HDD and installed from there.

Try it if all else fails.

Use Win98 startup disk, and create a bootable 700MB FAT32 Partition using fdisk.
Copy the entire CD to the partition, and install WindowsXP on a different partition (NTFS).

Might work...

Good luck..

Another Idea... a simpler one!!

Take out your Hard drive and install it in another computer.
Proceed to install WinXP normally. When/if the copy files completes(assuming the 94% problem doesnt happen again), and the computer restarts, unplug the power cord.
Take out your Hard Drive and put it back in your computer.

Let your computer start and detect your hardware!

It should at least give you an installed WinXP, if not a logical solution to the problem 😀

I had a similar ptoblem too. turned out to be a single dodgy IDE cable..... would prevent install at 8-90% everytime.

I would try it not using a partition but rather the whole drive. Sometimes its just stupid stuff that works. You can always change the partition setups later on in windows.
