XP Pro Install Problem: Manifest Parse Error

Everytime I try to install Windows XP Pro, it gets to the now installing part of the process, and I get this error:
Fatal Error
Manifest Parse Error: Invalid at the top level of the document
Component could not be installed
SXS.DLL
Installation Failed E:I386\asms

The MS website wasn't much help at all. Has anyone else had this problem or know what causes it.
I am running Windows 98 First Edition.

Most likely bad cd... have you tried installing the CD on another computer?

Yes, the cd works on other computers. I have also tried other cds on this computer, and they don't work either. I don't know what to do.

I have tried to install using both of my cd rw drive, and my dvd drive, so I don't think that is it either.

Bad IDE connection or bad RAM?

What's your motherboard and what version IDE drivers are you using?
